Mar. 30th, 2024 01:16 pm honestly, i've been starting to feel like completely dropping the term "visually impaired" because...
a) it's largely a legal term created by our oppressors and
b) i'm tired of sighted people with their glasses claiming they're visually impaired, and i feel like they're way less likely to claim other terms like "blindness" because of their own ableist narrow views of it.
at this point i'm starting to feel like letting them have their little word born out of oppression and moving more towards calling myself blind or other terms (which i've been doing anyway). they don't understand that blindness includes the full range of visual impairment, all the way from mild to profound, so they're way less likely to take it from us.
this is in no way aimed at actually visually impaired (i.e. people with uncorrectable vision) who continue claiming the term, i see you and love you so much. <3
